About My Work

I have a preoccupation with the world and our role in it.  My work expresses man's place in the world, his struggle, humanity's connectivity, society's responsibility, and individual choices.  The themes of my pieces bring forth ideologies and realizations and often tell stories or provoke conversation.

Subdivisions that sprawl to our suburban lands occupy my mind and my art.  There are two dimensional pieces that portray squares of land peppered with 'cookie cutter' housing, and three dimensional radiating squares that depict urban sprawl as it makes its way over farmland.  Scraps of wood and fabric become organic objects depicting animals, landscapes and homes that are directly affected by environmental decisions that are made by our society.  I have had many provocative conversations centering on my work.

My medium is mixed.  I create my art with various materials that make their way serendipitously to my studio.  Inspiration comes from the mingling of the materials, that have strengths and limitations of their own, with my eternal drive to communicate messages about our world, our place in it, and our need to pay attention to certain directions that mankind is taking.  I glean inspiration from found objects that I turn into two and three dimensional pieces. I have worked with reclaimed wood, wool, styrofoam, plastic, plexiglass, paper, fabric scraps and wire - all reclaimed.  I paint on wooden panels with remnants of acrylic paint, plaster and wax and incorporate paper and fabric into the surface.  I only occasionally purchase materials for my work because I aim to bring purpose to the discards of our society.  Visitors to my studio are often inspired to contribute materials that they no longer have a need for, to my studio.  One person's trash has indeed become another's treasure.

I work from a studio located in my home in Brantford Ontario.  I instruct art workshops in elementary schools, and  have worked as an art educator for Learning Through The Arts, Glenhyrst Art Gallery of Brant, St. Leonard Community Services, Brantford Arts Block, and the local School Board Enrichment Program.
